The last moments of Darlis Nkolomoni's life in Chicago were filled with the sort of fear his family fled Africa to escape.

Nkolomoni grew up in the city after his mother, Chantal Mulumba, brought him here as a baby, leaving Congo in 1999 amid political violence.
